AI data marketplace vs data broker vs data lab

How AI data marketplaces, data brokers and data labs differ in what they sell, how they price it and when to use each. With examples of each type.

An AI data marketplace is a platform where owners list datasets for buyers to compare, a data broker aggregates data and resells it, and a data lab creates new human-generated data to a customer's specification. They differ in what they sell, how they price it and which buyers they serve.

What does a data marketplace sell?

A data marketplace lists existing datasets from many owners and lets buyers search, compare and license them. Prices are usually posted, subscription-based or quoted. Examples include Datarade and Defined.ai. Cloud data exchanges such as AWS Data Exchange work the same way inside a cloud account.

What does a data broker sell?

A data broker collects data from several sources and sells or licenses it under its own terms. In AI the label covers licensing intermediaries such as Human Native AI, which help rights holders license content to developers, as well as traditional consumer-data brokers with a different risk profile.

What does a data lab sell?

A data lab produces new data: expert demonstrations, preference judgments, evaluation sets and RL environments. Examples are Scale AI, Surge AI and Turing. Pricing follows labor: per hour, per task or per project.

How do the three compare?

Attribute Marketplace Broker Lab
Sells Existing datasets from many owners Aggregated or licensed data New human-made data
Pricing Posted, subscription, quote Negotiated license Per hour, per task
Speed Days Weeks Weeks to months
Customisation Low Medium High
Rights risk Check each listing Check the chain Lower, work-for-hire

Which should you use?

Use a marketplace when an existing dataset fits and you want speed. Use a broker when you need licensed content with clear rights. Use a lab when you need data made to your specification. Many buyers use two, and the comparison pages show how providers overlap. The buyer's guide shows the full process.

Frequently asked questions
